5 Things to Consider When Creating a Sacred Space
If you've been living in the same house or apartment for a while, chances are your home doesn't feel quite like home anymore. It might be that the space just needs some sprucing up, or it might be that you need to change the environment itself by creating a sacred space where you can feel at peace, centered, and focused on what really matters to you. Here are five critical questions you should ask yourself when it comes to creating this kind of space within your home.
1) What is your intention?
It's essential to be clear about what you want your sacred space to be. What are you trying to achieve in your area? Is it for meditation, ritual, or contemplation? Do you want it to look and feel calm and welcoming? Do you need it to be unobtrusive so that others don't enter the space without permission? Take some time to think about why you're creating a sacred space in the first place.
2) How do you want to feel in the space?
Consider your ambiance. The ambiance is everything. Reflect on the feelings you want to experience in your sacred space. What kind of energy do you want to be around? What will the area feel like? This is all up to you. Create your sacred space with love, intention, and consideration for how you want to feel in it. Consider what kind of energy you want to surround yourself with, what type of energies might be present that may not serve your intentions, or if there are any emotions you want to release when entering the space.
3) How are you going to decorate it?
Mark your territory and bring an essence of you into your sacred space by using colors, textures, and patterns that speak to you. You can also bring in meaningful objects or images that have personal significance. Make your space uniquely yours and something you will enjoy for years to come! You can create an altar or find different ways to incorporate positive affirmations into everyday life by decorating your surroundings accordingly. So always think about each item's impact before placing something down so that the intent is preserved and feelings stay intact.
4) Will other people have access to the space?
Be clear about what you want your sacred space to be used for. Do you want it to be an area where people can meditate and practice yoga? Do you want it just for yourself? If others will have access, make sure that they know the boundaries of your space. It's vital that everyone feels safe in their sacred space, so if you're not comfortable with having others around while you're practicing, don't do it.
5) How can you maintain this space?
A system for maintaining your sacred space is critical. It's not enough to just create a space. You need to preserve your space so that it stays sacred and is not turned into a catch-all spot. Make sure you have a system in place that you follow, such as cleaning the area every Sunday or having someone else cleanse the site every week. Be mindful of what you bring into this space: What should be left out? What should be included? You might want to set up different areas in your space where items belong to prevent clutter, such as a basket or table.
